Applications - More Research

This publication had to be a representation of me as a designer and what I'm into. I've lately found out that I want to focus my practise into Swiss graphic design, as it is the type of design that attracts me the most. I want to be around people who does that kind of design, so by making what I want to be doing the designers that are doing that kind of design will notice it.

Mane Tatoullian is an Armenian designer that has been of great inspiration for this project, but it hasn't been the only one.

When asking others for inspiration, someone shared this list with me.

These are some of the designs that served as inspiration. What was intended to achieve was a striking use of layout, macro-typography and colours. The right use of white space is also very important and something that I'd like to master.

Very special meetings

There were three meetings that I consider worth commenting in detail, and those were with Néstor from La Escalera de Fumío, Sara Acosta and Urko.

Néstor

La escalera de Fumío is an advertising agency alocated in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. They define themselves as strategist, which is something I also think about myself. They also work specifically in digital design, not so much on physical objects, which was also another point in terms of our shared practices. The tone of voice they use accross their work and even in the e-mail they've sent me is very similar to mine: relaxed, friendly and even joking a little bit. Their office was small, humble but also lovely and cosy.

I offered my help in case they needed any for future projects, and I added this could be a good opportunity to know each other. When I told him about what I'm doing in the UK, he said how important was to go and live in a different country. He invited me to a party the 5th of January, but sadly by then I'll be back in the UK. After that, he asked me when I'll be back and insisted in keeping in touch and to send him the work I'll be producing. We exchanged business cards and I left with a very good feeling.

Urko

Urko is an old friend from school that recently got in touch with me, after so many years, to work in a number of projects. We got together for some pints and he commented that he needed a new visual identity and a structure for his website, so that is going to become one of the briefs for studio practice.

The big coincidence here is that Urko has worked with La Escalera de Fumío in the past, and Néstor also went to my school (which I didn't know, but he did once I told him I knew Urko from there). Urko gave me even more information about them, and ensured me that they most likely were going to call me because I am a great fit there.

Sara Acosta

After our collaboration for a project, Sara disappeared and I didn't know if I was going to work with her again. She got in touch to meet up, have a pint and talk about work. When I met her, she loved the work I produced for her and was always making comments about how much he liked my personality and how much he wanted me to work with her, to which I replied that I'd love to do it as long as she can provide me an economic stability. I also made jokes about how easy would be to have her located in an office instead of chasing her through whatsapp.

When I handed her my business card her reaction was very good, because she had in her wallet a similar business card and she wanted to do how it was done. So she told me she was going to hire me to design her business cards.

She also mentioned that she is involved in a project of a Russian magazine and asked me if I wanted to be part of it, which I obviously accepted! I don't know if that will happen, but at least she knows my willingness to do it.
